The Memex 2015 is designed to integrate the home computer, the television, and the video-cassette recorder. The latter two items are almost universal in American homes, and the home computer is steadily closing in on that status. People will need the Memex because it is a more elegant solution to fulfilling the desires that they already believe that they need to fulfill.

For households with children, the Memex 2015 can also serve a valuable educational purpose. If we agree (as I do) with Ted Nelson about the educational value of associational learning, then a machine with (practically) unlimited storage, convenient and inexpensive means of "uploading" new information, and an educational version of intra-Web software could be the ultimate home learning tool for children.
